It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that the last few months have been a period of anxiety and uncertainty for many of us businesses in Hyderabad. Changing political landscapes are often accompanied by a feeling of curiosity about its ramifications on the region’s immediate future. Following the unrest and insipidity associated with the city’s economic activity in the recent past, the newly elected government is going the extra mile to dispel any notions of negativity, leaving no stone unturned in reviving the Hyderabad growth story and giving it the necessary impetus to find its feet again.
At a conference with the city’s top IT companies at the Taj Krishna last week, Minister for Information Technology KT Rama Rao spelt out a definitive agenda for the city’s resurgence as the country’s prime IT destination. Highlighting the fact that the city continues to be the 2nd largest exporter of IT services in the country valued at around $8 billion, the minister stressed on the city’s naturally advantageous environment for success in the IT industry. He also reaffirmed the widely believed expectation that political stability and the arrival of a decisive government at the state would help shrug off the inactivity of the last few months.
Among the major policy initiatives announced by the newly elected government in its first few days in office, one of the most important ones is the idea to make Hyderabad the country’s first fully Wi-Fi enabled city – a prospect that has garnered much interest and appreciation among the city’s tech savvy population and businesses alike. The Minister also mulled the possible implementation of 4G services as well, to go along with the Wi-Fi initiative and ensure the best internet facilities for the city. This would also pave the way for facilitating e-governance in the various fields that impact the general public.
As part of the much needed policy push, the Minister has also proposed the speedy implementation of the country’s biggest incubator facility for entrepreneurship, research and development which would be set up in collaboration with the city’s top colleges such as the Indian School of Business (ISB) and the International Institute for Information Technology (IIIT). This is set to begin activity within 6 months and is expected to proceed in a time-bound fashion.
One of the persistent worries in connection to the city’s IT industry has been the lack of employable graduates coming through from the city’s colleges. The Minister proposed to address this by setting up the Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge (TASK), which would involve the city’s top companies picking up promising students before their graduation and imparting the necessary skills required to make them employable.
The Minister also dwelled on the endless possibilities that would arise from the implementation of the proposed Information Technology and Investment Region (ITIR) policy and the subsequent expansion of the IT hub to unexplored parts of the city. This policy is expected to generate close to 50,00,000 jobs and also help develop the city as a prominent hardware hub.
All of these announcements come as a breath of fresh air to a city whose IT growth is on the verge of ascendancy after a brief lull. One hopes that the government of the day can go beyond the rhetoric and take tangible steps to ensure a healthy and conducive climate for the city’s economic prosperity.
